NAGPUR: In a major boost to plastic industries of the region, the union chemicals and petrochemicals industry has decided to set up a plastic research institute in the industrial town of Chandrapur. At present Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET) has only one branch in the state at Aurangabad. Chandrapur’s will be the second. Hansraj Ahir, union minister of state for chemicals, told TOI that a tie-up was being done with Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) to ensure that local industry got customized solutions and trained manpower.
The minister, who belongs to Chandrapur, said the city had been chosen as it had a large industrial potential. “A branch of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) is coming up at Nagpur, so this one will be set up in Chandrapur. Efforts are on to start a smaller centre at Nagpur,” he said adding that Chandrapur collector had identified a 15 acre plot near the city for the purpose.
VIA president Atul Pande welcomed the development and said that industries of Vidarbha would greatly benefit from the institute. “There are about a thousand plastic industries in the region. At present, they have to go to Aurangabad for assistance. Aurangabad branch caters to the entire state and we don’t get customized solutions,” he added.
Explaining the need for the institute, Pande said plastic industry was evolving rapidly and industrialists required constant upgrade. “If you are not abreast of the latest developments, you may find the technology you are using is outdated and not cost effective. Secondly, the type of material you are using may become outdated and there are better materials available in the market. Due to this, VIA has been lobbying for a CIPET branch in the region. Ever since Ahir became the minister we had intensified our efforts,” he said.
According to Pande, CIPET does research and consultancy for plastic industry. It also helps in incubation of new ideas. “They take up an assignment and their team provides the solution. The researchers provide critical inpits to plastic industries and industrial training to manpower in this sector,” he further said.
“If Nagpur wants to have defence and automobile industries, then plastic industries providing the latest materials is a must. Vidarbha industries dominate the market in East and South India. CIPET will help it in increasing the market share. Plasto gets orders from all over India. More local industries can attain this stature,” the VIA chief said.
